“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” ~ Colossians 3:2 (New Living Translation)
When it comes to greed and gluttony, we don’t have to take a theology class to know it’s within us. We were all born with a sinful nature because of Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden, so naturally we want “more.” More isn’t always the best choice for our lives and God knows this. Sometimes God will purposefully block you out of having what you want because He sees that it can destroy you. God can shut doors purposefully to humble you and get you to appreciate the “more” you already have. The truth is, we are already filled with things, we have it in our closet, our refrigerator, our car, our shoes, etc. etc. we have more than enough, yet we crave more. What’s the deal with that?
Contentment is a word that’s abhorred in this age, because everything we are taught from music, to politics to television that “more” is better. More isn’t better. God doesn’t need a lot of stuff in your life to bless you. God doesn’t need a lot of people to bless you. God doesn’t need a lot of money to bless you. God can take the little bit of stuff you have and show you the abundance of opportunity that you already have in your possession. Sometimes we are looking at something and we think it’s insignificant, but it’s the very thing that is making the most difference in your life and the lives of others. Moses was told by God to acknowledge what was in his hand. His hand had a rod in it, after God spoke to him about it and God showed him how to use it, it became “the Rod of God.” Something around you is what is effective and it’s something you deem as insignificant, but it’s the ideal thing that God desires to use to bless the world around you. Find it, use it and then rename it “the (insert here) of God.”
Father in Jesus Name, thank You for the grace of God and the great gift of what we already have. Lord, teach us to be content and help us to persevere through those annoying and antagonizing thoughts of “more, more and more.” Holy Spirit, show us what is right around us that we can use to better ourselves, the people around us and most importantly Your Church. Holy Spirit show us the spiritual gifts that You have in us. Activate them. Lord, help us to appreciate right now and be aware of how to use what You see as greatly important and what we often see as insignificant. Lord, rename it for us and I thank You in advance for it in Jesus Name! AMEN!
