When Waiting Gets Tough

Father God in the Name of Jesus I pray for the Spirit of God to open my eyes and speak to me through what I am about to read. I ask for the Spirit to equip me for greater things in life. Lord, show me You in this and show me in this. Lord, reveal You to me so I can reveal You to others in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

“And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.– John 2:1-5 (King James Version)

Jesus was called to a marriage in Cana of Galilee.  Yet, there was a problem, there was no wine.  In the Biblical days, it would have caused shame over not having enough because weddings lasted a long time. Mary the Mother of Jesus Christ said “we need wine” and Jesus said “it’s not My time.”  Of course, He was replying in the sense of revealing that He is the divine God who came down from Heaven. He wasn’t ready to reveal He was the Messiah. It was the improper time.  Immediately Mary says to the others “do whatever He says.”  She probably didn’t understand what that meant, perhaps she knew something, but not fully, so she submitted to whatever Jesus desired to do, as should we.

The truth is we are all called to wait on something in our lives.  Many people understand it, but fight it. It’s not uncommon, and not a place to engulf yourself with guilt and self-condemnation.  There are few, if any who are truly patient without at times complaining.  God understands.  Nobody is perfect and God doesn’t expect perfection, but He does expect submission to His will.  God has a plan, even behind the waiting.  The truth is in the process of waiting, something is taking place, but it’s inside of you.

Many people think they are being prepared for something else or what they are praying for but forget that God is preparing them for a greater relationship with Him.  Why would God prepare you for something temporary when He is eternal?  There are certain aspects of healing that come about when we are waiting.  If we wait and pray while reading the Bible Gods presence will begin to heal the broken areas of our lives.  We all have harms, hurts, deceptions, abuses, and secret sins/hurts that have devastated us.  It’s a fact of life.  It’s not the will of God, but it is allowed by God because we live in a sinful and sin filled world.  We don’t have to look into a newspaper to see sin, we just have to look at our actions.  When we get angry and say things that are not of God, that’s the proof.  Yet, God has never said “you are a bad person.” That would be the voice of the enemy.

Now, what do you do when you wait?

1) Expect God to Work.  The Holy Spirit has a specific function in the life of a believer which is to make that person more like Jesus Christ according to Romans 8:29. That’s what God does and desires.  As you become more like Jesus you reveal Jesus to the world around you. Your life becomes a demonstration of Jesus’ love, grace and mercy.  It’s a divine revelation through a sinful human being.  It’s important to remember sometimes it’s not shoving the Bible down a person’s throat that wins them to Christ, but forgiving deep hurts and not holding it against them.

2) Prayer. Yes, at times it’s hard to pray when you feel like your hope is crushed.  You expected to find that mate.  You expected to get that job. You wanted that promotion and were in line, you know you deserved it, you waited 8 years and served in that job faithfully and a newcomer got it.  It’s hard to pray through disappointment, but when we don’t want to pray is the most important time to pray.  That’s the temptation of the enemy, it wasn’t the hope being crushed, but your prayer life being hindered.  What if God protected you from something?  What if you were on the way to work all excited and ran a red light and were seriously injured? What if you got involved with someone who destroyed your walk with Christ and manipulated you in every way possible?  What if you had something near you that God saw, but you didn’t and He protected you?  It’s easy to complain when you don’t see the full picture, but Jesus does.

3) Trust. Trust is the foundation of any relationship.  The truth is that it is easier to trust what we can see.  That’s another temptation of satan.  He wants us to trust what we can see.  When God does do what we waited for satan can make what we wanted an idol, something we start to trust in more than God.  God perhaps saw this taking place in Abraham in Genesis 22 and tested him and said “take your promised son and sacrifice him.”  Imagine that test.  God knows our ability to trust what we see, but He also knows the perfect way to bring our faith and trust back to Him.  It’s often through a test, trial or hardship where the “thing” that He finally produced in your life cannot solve.  We must worship a God who can heal, who can save, who can deliver, who can provide, who can do things no person can do and way more.  We must be careful who and what we worship, because they or “it” cannot save us.  They can offer advice, but only God can offer a solution. Although He can through a person, ultimately God must get the glory.

4) Favor. Waiting produces faith. Waiting produces character. Waiting is an opportunity for favor. Favor isn’t God doing something because you are so perfect, but because you are His child.  Favor is designed to bring you to worship and adoration, truly it’s designed to bring you closer to Him.  God wants to shower you with His love.  God wants to show you things you have never seen before.  God promised in Jeremiah 33:3 if we call to Him He would show us “things we don’t know about.” What a God, someone who can look at us in the present, show us something in the future or show us something in the present that we have overlooked that is divinely designed to help us.  God wants you to expect favor because He wants you to come closer to Him.  When you think of favor, it’s the highest form of the favor of God when you are drawn closer to God.

Father God in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray for the love of God to cover me completely.  Lord Jesus, help me to wait patiently as David did in Psalm 40.  Lord Jesus, we pray in repentance for complaining and complaining, but Lord Jesus help us to see there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Holy Spirit, show us great and mighty things we don’t know about. Lord, draw us, reveal Yourself and heal us deeply in the name of Jesus we trust You. We make the choice to trust. Right now, in Jesus Name. Amen.
